Need for Love, Approval and Endurance

Yesterday morning as I was watching the birds gather to feed around the tree in my yard, it left me thinking about where we go for sustenance.  As Virtuous Sisters and women of God, we can take a note from the lesson book of my birds.   Of all the other trees around the lake in my backyard, these birds flock around the tree that provides for them.  Where do we go for provisions?  And I am not only referring to physical provision but emotional and spiritual as well.

To know where to go, I believe we must first know what we need.  Let me outline some of the needs I have identified in my own life and perhaps you will identify with them also.

But, before I do so.  I want to acknowledge that needs are pointless if you are not aware of the assigned responsibility to meet them.  I want to begin by saying that there is only one place needs are fully met and that is in God and God alone.

All our needs can be summed up in 3 areas:
Love, Approval, and Endurance.

Love – The love of God for us is unparalleled on this earth.  So, it will be useless to seek to look anywhere other than to our Lord.  Give thanks to the Lord for His good; His love endures forever (Psalm 136:1).  When we look for relationships, marriages, friendships, etc. to meet this need for love, we are setting ourselves up for failure.  While it is certainly normal and appropriate to want love and comfort from human hearts, they could never fulfill the ultimate need for love.  When we refuse to accept this point and continue to move forward in our own search for love, we are so unlike the birds in my yard who know exactly where to find their sustenance.

What if disappointment is really the exact appointment your soul needs to radically encounter God?

Approval – I found it interesting that the very thing I look to for approval immediately becomes an idol and leaves me a victim to its desires.   This is frightening.  This is the result of negative thinking that erects strongholds in our lives that must be torn down by 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”  Refuse to be an approval-seeking woman.  In Christ, we are fully approved and accepted in the Beloved (Ephesians 1).

Nothing makes a more brilliant impression than a powerful woman walking into a room without pretension or insecurity, but with a balanced and warm spirit.

Endurance – The birds in my yard are a persistent and relentless bunch.  The amount of money I spend on bird feed establishes this point.  They do not visit sporadically, but day by day they come and even have the audacity to call on other birds to join in.  There is a lesson here for us.  You have need of endurance so as to do the will of God and receive what He has promised, says the Bible in Hebrews 10:36.  We live in a world where children grow up and leave.  We live in a world where jobs end by termination or retirement.  We live in a world where relationships end.  Nothing lasts forever except a spirit-filled, loving relationship with the Lord that endures until and beyond His second coming.

There is only one place needs are fully met and that is in God and God alone.
